The Case Study Houses 1945-1962

The second obsession I have are BOOKS, I actually HAVE books everywhere in my house; books about fashion, antique jewelry, photography, interior designers and decorators, all kinds of places in the world, art and architecture.

The two last books I bought about architecture are the Neutra and the Case Study Houses by Tashen.

Normally this kind of very modern and ”simple” architecture is not my type at all, I usually relate to something more classic, french style and a country house feel. But when I opened these books I totally changed my mind and could have moved into one of these houses.

The case study houses was an idea by the Arts&Architecture magazine that started after ceaseless discussions between John Entenza (the editor) and a number of young architects in 1945 in Los Angeles.

It is still one of Americas most important contribution to architecture in the mid-century.

Architects who contributed to the program were Richard Neutra, Charles and Ray Eames, Eero Saarien, Craig Ellwood, Whitney R. Smith, Thornton Abell, Rodney Walker and Pierre Koenig.

Most all of the houses are in rigorous steel, glass and wood which gives them  very simple and elegant style. I just love the purity of the spaces.

36 Houses were designed of which 18 are intact, 12 were unbuilt, 5 were remodeled and sadly 2 got demolished.

The pictures in the book are totally stunning! Thanks to Julius Shulman, THE most famous architectural photographer in the world. He began his carer in the 30′s and became a workaholic photographer.

”I see things architects don’t see… I’m not a religious man, but I’ve been blessed.”

Next time I visit LA I will definitely  try and visit CSH #22 by Pierre Koenig for the Stahl Family, the view on LA looks simply amazing.

Please check the magnificent books from Esther McCoy, Modern California Houses, Case Study Houses 1945-1962 and by Tashen, Case Study Houses, The Complete Program 1945-1962.
